MS & PCM Announce Winners of Tablet PC 'Does Your Code Think in Ink?' Contest

" Top Three New Tablet PC Power Toys, Chosen From Over 70 Creative Entries, Available for Free Download From PC Magazine

REDMOND, Wash., June 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) and PC Magazine today announced the winners of the Microsoft(R) Tablet PC "Does Your Code Think In Ink?" contest, a competition challenging developers to build the most creative PowerToy utilities that incorporate digital ink functionality included in the Microsoft Windows(R) XP Tablet PC Edition platform. The goal of the contest was to provide users with a new set of free PowerToys that will enrich their Tablet PC experience. Individual developers across the globe submitted code in competition for the grand prize of $15,000. Microsoft and PC Magazine selected one grand-prize winner and two runners-up from more than 70 unique entries."(source:prnewswire.com)

Tablet OS Makes Progress

"Microsoft Corp.'s Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005—the first major upgrade to the Tablet PC operating system—provides enough enhancements to entice some new converts. The update also will tide over current fans and developers until the release of a "Longhorn" version for Tablet PCs—or whatever Microsoft has planned for the Tablet operating system on the company's long and often-winding product road map.
eWEEK Labs' tests show that Tablet PC Edition 2005 dramatically improves on the initial release's handwriting-recognition capabilities and makes the overall Tablet PC experience more satisfying. However, enterprises evaluating Tablet PCs as possible notebook replacements should wait until Microsoft clarifies its plans for the operating system."(source:eweek.com)

The Tablet: Big Machine on Campus?
"Microsoft and Thomson Learning hope that a giveaway of the nifty notebooks will spark demand among students -- and teachers
This September, some University of Virginia students will be lugging more than course outlines, gargantuan textbooks, and standard laptops. Tucked away in their backpacks, 425 students of biochemistry, psychology, or statistics will have a new, free Tablet PC, courtesy of Microsoft (MSFT ) and Thomson Learning (TOC ).
The school believes the compact, portable PC, which is about the size of a typical spiral notebook, will add a new dimension to the classroom. The Tablet will let professors enliven lectures with digital extras and enable students to scrawl notes and draw diagrams while watching 3-D molecules split -- all with the touch of a stylus. Twinhead T8 ruggedized Tablet PC

"Taiwan has become the manufacturing base for the world’s notebook industry over the last few years and the country now produces more than half of the world’s output. However, few local industry players have made the demanding move in to industrial-use solutions. Twinhead has broken through the technology barriers and released its first fully-tested, industrial-use solution this year. Industrial notebooks require distinctive features such as waterproofing and shock resistance. Twinhead has implemented these features into its new T8 Tablet PC. This model has successfully passed shock, vibration, humidity, temperature, water immersion and dust exposure tests. The T8 conforms to military standards (MIL-STD-810) and is equipped with Billinton Bluetooth and Airvast 802.11b wireless modules."
