Microsoft to demo Windows 8 tablets in June, according to report

A Business Insider report has leaked Microsoft’s plans to demo the company’s new Windows 8 tablet OS in June.BI’s source did not mention which tablets the demonstration will be carried out on – it’s still a long way off yet – but there is speculation as to whether a new Dell device, the enigmatic, Peju tablet, maybe one the first machines to run the operating system, therefore making it a candidate for the demo.
The leak follows a report by ZDNet’s Mary Foley that outlined Microsoft’s development plan for the new OS, including a set of milestones, two of which have already been completed.

Tablet market will top $35bn by 2012, say analysts

Market analysts, JP Morgan have predicted that the tablet market will be worth $35.2bn by the end of 2012.As if there wasn’t enough speculation into the demise of the netbook already, the research also identified netbook and notebook PC devices as the major fall guys of the tablet’s continuing success story.

New research shows iPad’s dominance in 2010

New research has revealed the true extent of Apple’s dominance of the tablet market in 2010, proclaiming that 93% of all tablet devices sold in Q3 were iPads.The figures – released by ABI Research – showed that 4.5 million tablet devices were shipped in Q3, of which a staggering 4.19 million were iPad devices.
However, ABI’s senior practice director, Jeff Orr does not expect such a monopoly to continue, as numerous challengers wait in the wings to release their own iPad competitors:

Tech giants, Apple are now the proud owners of the largest share of the mobile-computing market thanks to a successful fourth quarter in 2010.The surge in iPad sales in this period helped the company leapfrog competitors HP and Acer, seizing the market-leader crown in the process.
Apple’s market share now tops 17% after they were the only PC brand to shift more than 10 million units in Q4; a feat that analyst Richard Shim put down to the “magical and revolutionary” iPad device;

Asustek expect quiet first quarter

Taiwanese PC company, Asustek have announced that they expect slow sales in the opening quarter of 2011, after posting a sales decrease of 29% in Q4 of 2010.Asustek blamed the 29% fall – a decrease that was actually less than the one forecasted – on a “big slowdown in netbook growth”.

Never mind iPad 2, is iPad 3 already in the pipeline?

With Apple’s iPad 2 not even a confirmed device, it seems ridiculous to talk about a follow-up; but some speculators are predicting an iPad 3 before the close of the year.
The Washington Post have run with a story from tech-blogger John Gruber, which talks of indicators from Apple that a third iPad is not too far away.

Dell’s new Streak 7 slate does have voice call capabilities after all, and StreakSmart have uncovered them.
However, its discoverers hint that there is maybe a sinister motive for how well hidden the app is; it doesn’t work.

iPads and other tablets are backed by House of Lords

A report issued by the House of Lords has backed the use of tablet devices and smartphones within the Lords chamber and grand committee.
There had been some limited opposition to the report by those who claimed that the devices would create a distraction – opposition that was countered by the amendment that all such devices must be kept on silent.

Android e-book reader launched

Educational tech company, Brainchild have launched the Kineo – an Android tablet marketed specifically as an e-reader.
The Kineo features an 800MHz, dual core processor, 256MB of RAM and 2GB of storage, as well as WiFi connectivity, a SD card slot and an HDMI output for streaming data through HD television screens. -
Soaring shipping figures of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab marred by low sales and high return rate

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab appeared to be setting the market alight with its rapid shipping, but reports are suggesting nearly 16% of sales of the device are ending in returns.
This news comes hot on the heels of another damaging revelation from Samsung: sales of the Galaxy Tab have not been as high as first reported.
