RIM’s research spending exposed

anadian firm, RIM spent $1.35 billion on research and development in 2011 alone, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.These figures equate to a tripling of research and development expenditure by RIM since 2008. In that same three-year period, sales of RIM’s BlackBerry units did rise, although this has been blamed upon a general increase in interest across the smartphone market.
In fact, BlackBerry’s smartphone market share dropped 3.4% in 2010, from 19.7% to 16.3%; a reflection of the high-levels of choice now offered to smartphone consumers.

Intel continue to back MeeGo with new demonstration

Intel sought to end any doubts about the future of their MeeGo OS for tablets by demoing the platform at MWC.
The operating system – a joint venture with Nokia – had been thrown into doubt by leaked memos suggesting the Finnish mobile company were in trouble, but now it seems that Intel wish to forge ahead with it.

Apple are top of mobile-PC tree following huge gains in Q4 of 2010

Tech giants, Apple are now the proud owners of the largest share of the mobile-computing market thanks to a successful fourth quarter in 2010.The surge in iPad sales in this period helped the company leapfrog competitors HP and Acer, seizing the market-leader crown in the process.
Apple’s market share now tops 17% after they were the only PC brand to shift more than 10 million units in Q4; a feat that analyst Richard Shim put down to the “magical and revolutionary” iPad device;

RIM’s PlayBook simulator gains a browser

BlackBerry manufacturers, RIM have added a browsing facility to the simulator of their new PlayBook tablet.The Canadian company have added the browser in the hope that it will give app developers an insight into how PlayBook users will browse the web, as well as allowing them to experiment with the Flash and HTML5 features supported by PlayBook.

RIM co-chief executive, Jim Balsillie has been talking about RIM, BlackBerry, the PlayBook Tablet and how RIM aim to dominate 2011.RIM’s BlackBerry smartphone has carved out a reputation as a reliable and versatile device, but the brand’s image has suffered in 2010 at the hands of trendier Apple and Android devices. The company will be hoping that a New Year onslaught on the tablet market will be enough to boost their profile.
