Canonical backs netbooks over tablets for its Ubuntu operating system

Canonical have announced that it is committed to the netbook market and that it has no plans to develop the Linux-based Ubuntu OS for tablets, as yet.Company founder, Mark Shuttleworth stated over the weekend that Canonical have remained un-swayed by the astronomical successes of tablet devices over the past year, and that the company remain loyal to the netbook and laptop PC markets.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 gets UK price and release date

One of Acer’s anticipated new tablet devices – the 7-inch Aconia Tab A100 – now has an official UK release date.The Iconia Tab A100 will hit the UK on April 20th, the same day as its 10.1-inch cousin, the A500.
The A100 will retail at £300, making it one of the cheapest tablets to run Google’s Android Honeycomb operating system. The A500 – also running Honeycomb – will set you back £450 on release.

Dell’s 10-inch Windows 7 tablet delayed until autumn

Dell have announced that their 10-inch, Windows 7 running tablet device will not be released until autumn.The device – codenamed Rosemount – was originally pencilled in for a May/June release according to the roadmap leaked by Dell in February; apparently this is no longer the case.
This latest information regarding Rosemount comes from a ‘source close to Dell’ who leaked the information to Forbes. The source also disclosed that the tablet would be aimed at enterprise customers when it is finally released.

Sony plan release of Android Honeycomb tablet

Sony have announced plans to join the fray with an Android 3.0 tablet of their own.The tablet – running Google’s tablet optimised OS – is currently unnamed but is expected be released by the end of the year.
The device is expected to use a 9.4 inch touchscreen display and is rumoured to be a gaming orientated device, able to play games from Sony’s PlayStation 1 console, released way back in 1994.

HP gives app developers access to webOS 3.0

HP have provided developers with a development kit for their new operating system – webOS 3.0.The OS will not feature on a tablet until the new TouchPad device is released in the summer, but HP hope that by giving developers a head start they can provide TouchPad users with a range of useful and unique applications.

Asus will release their first Android Honeycomb tablet in the UK on April 6th, a fortnight behind the iPad 2.Presales have already begun for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, which costs £380; £19 less than Apple’s latest tablet.

Android Honeycomb apps in short supply as Motorola Xoom prepares for launch

Native apps for Google’s Android Honeycomb are still scarce as one of Honeycomb’s big hitters – the Motorola Xoom – prepares for a UK launch.Tech blogger, Justin Williams has identified just 20 applications specifically and exclusively designed for Honeycomb tablets available on the Android Marketplace, with the remainder being simply “upconverted” Android v2.0 apps.

RIM relying on successful PlayBook launch after poor sales

Canadian firm, Research in Motion – or RIM – have reported yet another quarter of negative growth as their smartphone market share dips below a quarter.Now commanding only 22% of the smartphone market, RIM are reliant on a successful launch for their PlayBook tablet to boost the company’s fortunes.
The device is scheduled for release in the US and Canada on April 19th, making the next three weeks a nervous time for CEO Jim Balsillie and his colleagues at RIM.

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer rumoured for March 30th UK release

Rumours suggest that ASUS’ Eee Pad Transformer hybrid device will be available in the UK on March 30th.The tablet-cum-netbook device was released in the company’s native Taiwan today, but sites such as Phandroid have hinted that the device may be hitting the UK as early as next week.
The basic 16GB version is currently retailing for $500US in Taiwan, with the 32GB version fetching $600US, although these prices are expected to change as the device becomes available worldwide.
