    A report issued by the House of Lords has backed the use of tablet devices and smartphones within the Lords chamber and grand committee.

    There had been some limited opposition to the report by those who claimed that the devices would create a distraction – opposition that was countered by the amendment that all such devices must be kept on silent.

    American news agency, Reuters claim to have spotted a working model of Apple’s unreleased iPad 2 tablet at the release event for The Daily, a digital newspaper app for the iPad.

    Reuters say that an eyewitness spotted the prototype at the subsequent press conference about the digital newspaper, and that the sighting was corroborated by a source at Apple who confirmed that working prototypes of iPad 2 are currently in existence.

    The Daily – Apple’s digital newspaper for the iPad – has officially launched in the US.

    The ‘paper’ is a project run jointly by Apple and Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp; it will be downloadable from the Apple App Store, with weekly subscriptions costing 99cents – or $39.99 for a year.

    Research by Strategy Analytics has shown that 22% of the estimated 10 million tablet devices on the market now run Google’s Android OS.

    These figures from quarter 4 of 2010 represent an astonishing jump from a 2.3% market share in the previous quarter, slashing Apple’s share of the market from 96% to 75%.

    Neil Mawston, director of Strategy Analytics spoke of the effect that the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab had in getting the ball rolling for Google.
