Analysts predict Apple’s dominance of the tablet market in 2011

Apple will continue to dominate the tablet market in 2011 according to a new report by market researchers, Canalys.Canalys’ report predicts that tablet sales will hit 52 million units over the course of 2011, with 75% of sales lining the pockets of Apple.
There are parallels between this report and an earlier one by Goldman Sachs, which predicted that 54.7 million tablet units would be sold in 2011, and that of those units 37.2 million would be Apple iPads or iPad 2s.

O2 will not be selling iPad 2

Network provider, O2 have confirmed that they will not be selling the iPad2 on subsidised contracts but would not give a reason as to why.Instead, O2 directed their customers to their existing pay as you go microSIM offer, telling them they would have to purchase the tablet elsewhere.
A statement released by the company said “O2 will continue to offer great value, flexible data tariffs for iPad 2 and the unique ability to manage these tariffs on the device itself”. O2 also said that customers using the iPad 2 on their network would benefit from unlimited WiFi at BT Openzone and Cloud hotspots.

UK retailer’s iPad stocks dwindle, fueling speculation about iPad2 release

Apple’s iPad tablets are not being restocked in several major UK retail chains, leading to speculation about an imminent release of the new iPad 2.Argos and Misco are the latest retailers to display the tell-tale signs of stock clearance, an indicator that seems to contradict a recent rumour that Apple were “significantly delaying” the release of their new tablet.

Design finalized for iPad 2 leather carry case

A video released by MIC Gadget appears to reveal the finalized design for a leather case for Apple’s imminent iPad 2 tablet.The video portrays a smart leather case which folds out in a similar way to a laptop bag. One half of the folding case re-folds in a gatefold style to form a handy stand for the iPad 2 device.
Pictures have also been released that show a tan coloured version and a classy all black version of the case, both of which include strategically positioned holes and openings for a larger speaker and a camera.

Apple are top of mobile-PC tree following huge gains in Q4 of 2010

Tech giants, Apple are now the proud owners of the largest share of the mobile-computing market thanks to a successful fourth quarter in 2010.The surge in iPad sales in this period helped the company leapfrog competitors HP and Acer, seizing the market-leader crown in the process.
Apple’s market share now tops 17% after they were the only PC brand to shift more than 10 million units in Q4; a feat that analyst Richard Shim put down to the “magical and revolutionary” iPad device;

Yahoo follows in the footsteps of The Daily with its Livestand app

Yahoo have announced the Livestand app for tablets and mobile devices, an application which allows personalised browsing of Yahoo sites, such as Yahoo News and Yahoo Sports.
The app will also allow browsing of Flickr and celebrity gossip site, OMG, both of which are owned by the California company.

Never mind iPad 2, is iPad 3 already in the pipeline?

With Apple’s iPad 2 not even a confirmed device, it seems ridiculous to talk about a follow-up; but some speculators are predicting an iPad 3 before the close of the year.
The Washington Post have run with a story from tech-blogger John Gruber, which talks of indicators from Apple that a third iPad is not too far away.

BBC iPlayer app confirmed for Android tablets

Following on from the BBC’s confirmation that the iPlayer app will be available on the iPad; the iconic broadcasting company have announced that the app will be available on Android devices also.Yesterday, the BBC announced that the iPlayer app would be available on iPad tablets from February 10th onwards, eventually hitting the US in June.

Consumer concern over Motorola Xoom pricing plays into Apple’s hands

Motorola have suffered a setback as they prepare to do battle with Apple’s iPad devices in the marketplace: consumers think the Xoom tablet is just too expensive.The Xoom – due to be the first tablet to run Google’s Android Honeycomb OS – has had a $799 price tag slapped on it by US carriers Verizon Wireless and vendors Best Buy, in a move that could backfire for Motorola.

Asus’ “secret weapon” rumoured to be 3D tablet

A few days ago we brought you the news that Asus were lining up a “secret weapon” to counter the release of Apple’s iPad 2.
Rumour has it that this secret weapon will be Asus’ first 3D tablet.
Asustek chairman Jonny Shih played his cards close to his chest when speaking of his company’s plans for the coming year, and remained guarded about the “secret weapon”. The only thing he let slip was that more information will be revealed closer to the launch time.
