Intel SSD320 tn Intel launch new and improved SSD series at laptopshop.co.ukIntel have launched the SSD 320, a series of third-generation solid-state drives that the company say are more reliable and provide greater storage capabilities than their predecessors.

The 320 series replaces Intel’s X25-M PC drive and is based upon a 25-nanometer flash memory process developed by IM technologies, a joint operation between Intel and Micron Technologies.

The 25-nanometer NAND technology was first developed by the two companies a year ago; following its unveiling, IM compared its performance to that of a compact disc, stating that a single NAND device can hold 10 times the amount of data that a CD can, and can fit through the hole in the CD’s centre.

The writing speed of the 320 series is more than double that of its predecessor; an increase which is designed to enable the PC to multi-task without experiencing any noticeable lags. The series also features 128-bit AES encryption to protect data stored on the devices.

Intel’s director of marketing for Non-Volatile Memory – or NVM – Peter Hazen believes that the new range of drives will further enhance the profile of Intel on the PC market:

“Whether it’s a consumer or corporate IT looking to upgrade from a hard disk drive, or an enterprise seeking to deploy SSDs in their data centers,” writes Hazen. “the new Intel SSD 320 Series will continue to build on our reputation of high quality and dependability over the life of the SSD”.

The new drives will be available in 40GB, 80GB, 120GB, 160GB, 300GB and 600GB versions, costing $89, $159, $209, $289, $529 and $1069 respectively at wholesale. Individual retail prices will be somewhat higher.
