Intel’s new Atom CPUs to compete with AMD’s Fusion range

The dominance of Intel Atom processors in netbooks has been challenged recently by the advances made by AMD with their Fusion APUs.

Now, Intel are focusing on reclaiming this dominance with their new batch of Atom CPUs, around which they hope to develop fanless netbooks.

The removal of a fan cooling system from the netbook would be the next major leap in the development of lightweight, razor-thin netbooks. Such an advance could also be key in the survival of the netbook; a tech species that has been hit hard by the explosion of the tablet market.

AMD’s Fusion initiative has been praised by netbook manufacturers and consumers alike for the power-saving and space-saving properties of its processing chips. The basis of the Fusion initiative was to combine a processing chip with a graphics chip, saving space and conserving energy within the unit.

Intel are now hoping to gain similar acclaim with their Cedar Trail Atom processors, a range which is now in development.

However, there is some debate as to whether Intel will be ready to demo their new chips at the next Intel Developer Forum – or IDF – which will be held in Beijing on April 13th.

So we may have to wait a little bit longer to see if there is any veracity in Intel’s claims.
