Processor company, Intel, have announced plans to increase their focus on the burgeoning tablet market with the formation of a new division.

Intel will be hoping that the ‘Netbook and Tablet Group’ will make them some serious gains, in a section of the market currently dominated by rival, ARM.

Bill Kircos, a spokesman for Intel, confirmed the plans and also announced that Douglas Davies, currently head of Intel’s ‘Embedded Communications Group’, will be at the helm.

“It makes sense for us to sharpen our focus on these friends of the PC”, Mr Kircos said, “Doug’s experience running a similar and very successful embedded division makes him the right guy to lead the group.”

With Tablet devices such as the Apple iPad and Archos Home Tablet flying off the shelves like hot cakes, it makes sense that Intel would want a piece of that action. Especially when you consider that ARM – Intel’s major rival in processor production – is considered to be almost unchallenged in this market.

In fact, both the Archos Home Tablet and the iPad use ARM processors, making this area of the market ripe for competition from Intel, who will be freshly boosted by the announcement that their new Atom processor will be powering the Google Chrome Netbook when it finally drops.

If Intel are to take meaningful action, however, they need to take it quickly. ARM already have a running start on Intel, who have been far too slow off the mark to profit from the Tablet’s Christmas boom in sales. It remains to be seen ARM can be caught in the long run.
