An e-book reader, more commonly called eReader, is an electronic device that is designed primarily for the purpose of reading digital books and periodicals and uses e-ink technology to display content to its readers. Simply put, it’s a portable device that allows you to upload numerous e-books in one gadget so you can basically stash a dozen or so of your favorite reads in one slim and handy gadget.
eReaders are perfect for people who love to read; but since an eReader has several other features, it’s best to focus on these to find out which features are appropriate for your needs before you head out and buy yourself the first one you like.
In the first place, consider the screen of the device. Most eReaders use a low power black and white technology called E Ink when rendering pages on their screens, for you to have the sensation of holding and reading a real book. The downside of this is that pages take long to refresh and it’s not backlit so you basically still have to use a reading lamp. So if you intend to do more than just read, let’s say for instance you want to use your gadget to surf the net, you might as well choose something that has an LCD display, like an iPad.
And what if you need to take down notes in the midst of your reading? In that case, it would be a great idea to choose an eReader that has touch screen functionality. Another factor to be considered is the type of connectivity you need. Ask yourself whether you’ll be downloading stuff onto your computer (eBooks, newspapers…) and choose the most appropriate Internet access, be it Wi-Fi or 3G.
Indeed, there are a number of things you need to keep in mind when looking for the best eReader. If all things mentioned above plus some other extras are thrown in on the device you’re eyeing, then you definitely hit the spot!
